What is WIFI 6 or 802.11 ax?

WIFI6 or 802.11ax is the new standard for high density environments with many end device clients for high bandwidth replacement for wired networks

The new WLAN standard WiFi 6 – also called IEEE 802.11ax or High Efficiency Wireless (HEW) – offers new options for operating so-called “high density environments”. In areas with a high number of WLAN clients - and increasingly IoT devices in the future - it ensures that collisions are reduced when these clients are operating at the same time and also increases the overall throughput.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has proposed the Wi-Fi 6 standard to combine the freedom of movement and super-high speed enabled by Gigabit Ethernet wireless connections with the reliability and predictability of licensed spectrum

Compared to older standards, WiFi6 offers the advantage of lower latency per WLAN client. When it comes to WLAN, it is no longer just about more speed, but rather about increasing the average throughput per WLAN client, especially in high-density environments.

What advantages does WiFi6 offer?

WiFi 6 allows enterprises and service providers to deploy new and emerging applications on the same wireless LAN (WLAN) infrastructure as legacy applications, while improving the quality of service of legacy applications. This can lay the foundation for new business models and increased implementation of WiFi.

Will WIFI 6 be compatible with 802.11ac?

Just like all other WiFi developments in recent years, Wi-Fi 6 will also be backwards compatible. The new standard will build on existing technologies and make them more efficient.
